Now tell me, who the hell decided to design a bottle of insect spray to look just like a bottle of Windex???  Who?  Why? I've had three water/flood/wave dreams this week.  Three in one week.  To say nothing of the massively long Noah's Ark dream I had a month ago.  During the first two dreams, I was more of an observer.  I watched as huge waves crashed against other people.  The first was a lake - almost like I was standing at <a href="http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=506">Emerald Bay on Lake Tahoe</a>.  The waters receded in a big whoosh of a vacuum and people were standing at the bottom of the bay.  But the water came back in waves and kept slamming against them.  The second dream was with an ocean that produced massive waves so quickly the fishermen and boaters did not have time to get out of the water.  One boat was repeatedly swept up against the shore and back out to sea.  One couple was trying to disembark without losing their grip on the ladder they were holding.  It wasn't possible. I should change the title.  We are not in a recession right now.  We paranoid jumpy consumers are just complaining about nothing. Uh huh.........how much does a gallon of milk cost you these days?  My Lactaid non-fat was $4.99 at the beginning of July.  ($5.89 is you don't have a ridiculous Safeway card) So, what am I doing, in my small way, to buffer my checkbook against rapidly rising food costs? Sweetie and I went for breakfast yesterday morning.  We drove, shared some eggs and pancakes, and then he drove to work and I walked home. With the flames and the smoke and 100-plus degree weather this week, I know it has been a miserable start of summer.  Talked to a friend yesterday who said the smoke was pretty bad in Sacramento.  I''m hoping the wildfires settle down.  With such widespread devastation, every news item brings different people to mind: everyone in the valley suffering from the heavy smoke, old co-workers who now live in Monterey County, my mom-in-law in Santa Cruz County, old boyfriend's parents living in Paradise, the Hawaiian firefighters who got on planes last week to help fight the fire, and on and on.  News last night said firefighters have come from 41 states to try and help.  But I think it is going to be a long summer. In case you have not heard, Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary has released their annual update of new words.  Many words that have been part of the vocabulary of regular folks for years are finally regular enough to be included in the dictionary. Among the new words?  Texas Hold 'Em.  Welcome Texas Hold 'Em!  Of course, the current definition is about as bare bones as you can get:  poker in which each player is dealt two cards facedown and all players share five cards dealt faceup. I just wrote an entry and it got eaten. Here is the short version. 4th of July - quiet day.  BBQ hot dogs.  Watch neighborhood kids light fireworks outside. Watch New Twilight Zone episode. Start to wash dishes.  SNAP!! Lights go out.  FLASH!  Power line behind the house flashes, sparks, zaps.  I run around.  Sweetie calls 911.  We grab flashlights.  ZAP!  Power line sparks again.  I get slightly wigged out. We run outside.  Sweetie walks towards road with power lines.  I object.  We observe from a distance that lights are out all over.  Hear from passing truck that trees fell on line farther down the road. We go back inside.  Decide to sleep in guest bedroom because I don't want to be zapped in the middle of the night from a broken line behind our bedroom. Well, that was too fun for words.  Almost. I like this show.  I haven't seen most of the episodes because I don't make a point to catch them.  But when I do, I like this show.  I know - I'm setting back whatever image of strong womankind we strong women are supposed to project and endorse.  I'm a traitor to my own kind.  Especially since I can't explain why.  But these women crack me up.  I like watching Holly, Bridget, and Kendra.  Maybe because, despite all being very blond and occasionally (well - often) ditzy, they each have different personalities.  Maybe because I grew up in an era when owning Playboys was ok and getting into the Playboy Clubs was a big ritzy deal.  No, I'll just shut up.  There's no good excuse.  I don't even have a girl-crush on any of them. Well, I am happy to say, Sweetie and I have found another massage school!  Our new discovery is the <a href="http://www.alohamassageschool.com/index.html">Aloha School of Massage Therapy</a> in Kahului.  They offer the same thing - they have student clinics where the students practice their massage techniques, and they offer hour-long massages for $30.  The same caveats apply - you will be getting a massage from a student, possibly with an instructor coming in and out to offer appraisal and assistance.  This is not a fancy massage place with your own room, bathrobes, and scented candles, etc.  There is one large room with individual tables separated by hanging curtains.  But you know, for $30 (plus tip), Sweetie and I just got some pretty sweet massages.  Both of us thought these massages were better than... http://stonegirlblog.multiply.com/journal/item/658/Mauis_Massage_Secret_Part_2 Thu, 26 Jun 2008 21:02:00 -0000 Music Right Now (R rated) So I am currently listening to My Boys.  For those of you who don't know, when I refer to The Boys, I mean only two possible groups.  Not like my Sweetie who seems to exclaim "It's my boys!" with every other song in his repertoire. No, for me, it is either Tears for Fears or A-ha.  Yes, I am a child of the 80s (and 70s).  Back off.  These were my two favorites back in high school.
